Two Symbols--Part Four

How many of you remember a story I started a long time ago called Two Symbols? I was sick today resulting in extra time on my hands. The result: I finished it! If you need to go review the links for previous parts are below. As a side note, since I first started posting this I have gone back and done a lot of editing. I like the story now much better than the version posted on here...oh well.

Part One
Part Two
Part Three
Character Sketches

Stephania

Stefania dove behind a convenient bush and began wriggling closer on her stomach. It would take several washes to get the dirt out of her shirt but she pushed the thought out of her mind.

“Be careful, girl. You have played with us a long time and we have tried all our gentle means of getting you to do what is only right. Even now, if you only tell us where your friend is we will make you a leader. They get many benefits you know. And your friend, she won’t be hurt we just need to correct her.”

Stefania saw Irena studying the creases in her palms and chewing on her lip. “If that’s true then why, when you saw someone sitting under her old bridge, did you shoot them on sight?”

Stefania put a hand on her stomach and grabbed at the tree truck she was hiding behind. Her bridge—some innocent person resting in it’s shade had been taken for her and simply shot on sight. She took deep breaths in an effort to still her shaking body.

“It looked like they were pulling a gun. But anyway, that doesn’t matter. She’ll be fine.”

There was silence then Irena’s voice came back, heavy as with tiredness. “I told you, I don’t know where she is.” Stefania heard a chair scrape as Irena suddenly stood up. She looked up quickly and was surprised by her friend’s face. It was defiant, brave, hard, she couldn’t quite put a finger on it Irena looked different. “ I don’t care where she is either so long as she is safely away from you.”

Stefania held her breath and starred at Irena’s hardened jaw. Was it really only months ago she was trying to do just what the GOV’s were now urging.

The man looked at each other with eyebrows raised. The one behind Irena touched his baton but the other barely shook his head.

There was an awkward and tense silence during which Irena stood without moving.

“Well, we believe you. You may go now.”

Too easy. Stefania thought. There is some catch here. They are not that easy on those who defy them. She crept underneath the window which was low enough that she had to crawl on hands and knees to stay hidden.

“Would you like a drink before you go? We’ve had you in here chatting for more than an hour and you must be thirsty.”

She jumped to her feet. There was the catch. “No Irena! No!”

The men froze. The subject of their conversation had astoundingly appeared.

Stefania was only a minute getting through the window and one more grabbing her friend’s arm and hauling her out of the building. The stunned silence was quickly broken. Shouts followed and she could hear footsteps running behind them as well.

Irena seemed dazed and Stefania had to literally drag her.

“What are you doing here?” She finally gasped as she stumbled and Stefania grabbed her roughly around the waste and pulled her up.

“Never mind. Just run.”

“Where?”

Stefania missed a step and tripped a bit. She didn’t know. Where could they go? Her instinct said run, but that wouldn’t do her any good if she didn’t run somewhere. The GOV’s had guns, tazers and grenades and she was sure they wouldn’t be worried about using them.

“To the lake.” She pulled Irena sharply to the right. Then she heard shouts in front. She grabbed the thinner girl with both arms and falling so that she herself was underneath rolled off the road and into a near by magnolia tree. The branches grew clear down to the ground from fairly high up on the trunk forming a natural and dense tent.

“Stay down!” She threw her own body over Irena’s white jacket. Her dark grey shirt would blend in well with the shadows.

Her hair was falling over her face and she carefully turned it away from the road so that as little of her skin as possible would show.

They could hear feet and shouts. She didn’t notice when her hand, holding Irena’s head, began to grow wet.

“Stefania.” The voice was so quite she almost thought it was just in her head.

“What if—if—they are still alive?” She dared not move her heard but she could see Irena out of the corner of one blue eye and she knew it was her.

“Who?” She whispered back knowing that the surrounding din would mask their hushed conversation.

“My family?” Irena’s hand gripped the ground.

“Your family?”

“Yes. If they were still alive, what will happen to them? I’ve been trying to be good, to do everything right so that maybe someday they would think it was okay to tell me where my family was.”

Stefania ran her tongue around in her mouth several times. “They wouldn’t have Irena. You know that.”

The noise was dying away, some of it in one direction and some in another. Stefania cautiously faced around and then got off Irena. She didn’t move.

“I know….But, what if my family is still alive. Will something be done to them because I rebelled?”

Stefania dusted her hands on her jeans. She couldn’t bare to answer that question.

“You know, I’ve tried to get out to the jail a few times. But somehow or other I was always stopped. I still don’t know why they took everyone but me. It doesn’t make sense.”

“Irena…” Stefania began and then trailed off. “We should get going.”

Irena slowly got to her feet.

“Take off your jacket. It’s too bright. Your brown uniform will be great camouflage without that.”

She unzipped the white leather and slowly pulled one arm out. She fingered her eagle pin.

“Leave it. It is a symbol of everything that has ever hurt you.”

“You said once it was a symbol of cruelty.” She dropped the jacket and turned away. “I think I believe you now.”

Stefania parted the big leaves on the side of the tree opposite to the road. “Come this way. I think we can stay out of sight better.”

Without a word Irena followed. Soon they came to a rarely used dirt road and Irena saw Stefania relax a little and fall back to walk beside her.

“Do you think some of your friends could ever help me get to the jail?” Irena watched her friend’s face closely as they walked.

Stefania glanced her way and then quickly began busily putting up her hair.

Irena stepped in front of her and grabbed her hands. “I know you know something. What are you not telling me?”

Stefania’s eyes were watery and threatening to spill over. “Not, now, we need to keep moving.”

Irena crossed her arms and purposrfully stepped in front f her friend.

“Irena, the jail is empty. They filled it full, then decided it was too much trouble, liquidated it and now…people just don’t ever get to the jail.”

Irena dropped her hands. “And my family?”

“There are a thousand nameless graves. Someday, when this is over, we will go put flowers on everyone.”

Irena began walking very quickly and Stefania was almost running to keep up with her. To her surprise the brown eyes were dry, unlike her own.

“I knew it. It knew they could not be alive but I had to try.”

“Then eachother is all we have left, Irena. We can't let something come between us again.”

Irena stopped and looked back. “No, never. Nothing will ever separate us again.”

Stefania stopped and looked at the ground. That distant look that disturbed Irena had come over her face again. “No, I cannot say ever separate us. We do not know what might happen. But we will always be friends.”

“What might separate us? There is nothing. From now on I will go with you and we will stay together.”

Stefania looked up and looked her full in the face for a moment. “Here,” She reached up and began fumbling with the clasp on her necklace. “I want you to have this. The people at camp Phoenix will be good to you if they see you wearing it.”

“But can’t I just get one when we get there?”

“Take it.” Stephania shoved it out to her. “They already know me, but if for some reason we get separated they'll be more likely to trust you if you're wearing one of those.”

Irena pursed her lips. “We're not going to get separated.”

“Please put it on.”

Irena shrugged and passed the chain around her neck.

They walked on it silence and the Stefania said, “We have switched places a lot recently. First, you were weak and I was strong. Then you defended me to the GOV’s today. Then I drug you off and you were weak again. And now, when you’ve had this news about you’re family you’re strong again. We sure are confusing.”

They both smiled.

“I don’t know. Maybe we just now what the other one needs and when.”

They were walking past a small shed.

It had no windows but the walls themselves had many small holes. Stefania instinctively grabbed her friend's arm. Something was not right.

They heard two metallic clicks.

“Run!” Stefania had grown up around guns a new the sound of one cocking.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Irena
A small trim woman stood on a low rise. Behind her the ruins of an old prison, bombed and blackened, in front of her a thousand nameless graves.
She tucked a silvery peace of curly hair behind her ear with one well used hand while in the other she pulled a wagon filled with poppies.
A tall man came up behind her also pulling a wagon.
“It seems strange, you know. Having enough food now and not having to keep everything so secret. Being able to actually go to town. Everything. It’s just so different.”
“Yes, Castus, it is. Things have been wrong for a long time, but now, they are finally right.”
“These concrete markers, are they the graves you were talking about?”
“Yes.”
“But there are a thousand and all unmarked!”
She touched the dented and tarnished bird that hung around her neck. “A thousand and one.”
“Whose the one?
The one whose ashes gave me fire. The one who was a symbol.”
What do you think? I really felt like I could have ended this better. But somehow, no matter how I arranged it I couldn't pack the punch I wanted. Any ideas?
And as a bonus, here is a link to the song Stephania sang Irena (Back in part three). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faHO0XIPSSA
A Very Short Story
Yesterday when I finally got open office downloaded to my computer I wrote a celebratory story in honor of the occasion. My sister, happened to come in just as I was finishing it and read it over my shoulder. She liked it so well I thought I would share it with you all too.
Once upon a time, in a time called the future, there lived a thing which died. Now with this anticlimactic beginning, I will end my story.
Do you like it? We joked about me going on and actually writing a humorous with this as the beginning but I don't think that is likely to happen.:)
Don't Forget About L.A.R.K. Book Reviews!
I haven't had time for leisure reading or writing, but I have been doing a lot of reading and writing about books at college. If you are interested in what I've been reading, I decided I could post a few reviews on our book review blog. I only have one up right now but plan on adding more.
Blessings,
Grace
Inventors and The Uses of Their Inventions
Here is a short essay I had to write for school today. The topic was interesting but I had a surprisingly hard time coming up with data for it!
Inventors and the Uses of Their Inventions
Most of us humans are exceedingly proud of our accomplishments. The greater they are the more big headed we get. But what if our accomplishment had a massive negative impact on mankind? Let us look at two examples.
 1 In a letter to Lester Gardener  in August of 1946, Orville Wright wrote that he “once thought the aeroplane would end wars.”  He, as well as many others, assumed that flight would prove such a devastating ability wars would practically be ended before they started. Three years after receiving their official patent Wilber and Orville Wright tested their machine for the U.S. Army. Later the brothers even provided airplanes and trained pilots for WWI. They worked diligently for what they hoped would bring world peace. Those of us who were at that time still the future generation can read our history books and see this was not the case.
Close to the end of WWII, Orville’s peace bringing bird dropped a highly controversial and hugely  devastating capsule called “the atomic bomb”. 2 In the same letter that Wright spoke of his earlier optimism  he wrote, “I now wonder whether the aeroplane and the atomic bomb can do it [end wars].” The note of sorrow rings with a tinge of regret that his world changing invention did not bring about the calm he had imagined.
3There was another man who dreamed that his invention would put and end to wars. His name was Alfred Nobel. We know him best as the founder of the Nobel peace prize but with out studying much further we find a seeming contradiction. Nobel was the man who first concocted dynamite. Though this explosive was originally designed for blasting in mines we are not surprised to read history and find it quickly used for war. At first Nobel did not seem to mind this. In fact he told Austrian Countess Bertha von Sutter in 1891, 4 “Perhaps my factories will put an end to war sooner than your congresses; on the day that two army corps can mutually annihilate each other in a second, all civilized nations will surely recoil with horror and disband their troops.”
Alfred Nobel did not live to see WWI or to understand just how mistaken he was.
These two men were very gifted but did they make a mistake? I do not believe we can lay the blame of higher military (and civilian) casualties on these brilliant men who hoped to bring something the greater portion of the world also longs for, peace.  However, we can learn the lesson that they too must have realized: our actions can have uncontrollable repercussions. After all, “5With great power comes great responsibility.”
My writing book  said to use the last paragraph to sum up my point. I did not really have a point so this assignment was difficult. In the end I gave up and used the above but I do not care for it. Any ideas?
The Beetle's Song
I'm in love. In love with the song of the heavens, the wind in the trees, and trickling of the brook. But most of all, I'm in love with Crescendo. His arms are smooth and strong. His hands thick and warm. But it's his song – yes, his song – that's most beautiful to me. It's ever growing in intensity, every note building upon the other, until it reaches a pinnacle of perfection you never though possible. Still it grows, weaving in, weaving out, till there's a thousand tender strands woven into his song. That's how it always builds until he touches me. When our hands are interwoven, his song stops altogether, like he's pausing for a breath, and I know he's listening to mine – he told me so.
Mine is like a war, he says. Like the clash of beda-beetles on the front lines. Like a chaotic
cacophony of melodies colliding. I ask him, “Is it pretty?”
“I like it,” he says. “You've many thoughts a tumbling around in your head.”
“And that's a good thing?”
“Yes, it means you think.”
Yes, I do think. Too much Mama says. But my thoughts won't sit still even under the strongest meditation. It makes my beda-bug feisty. She buzzes and flits beside my ear, tickling every hair till I brush her away. She'd make a good battle bug, Papa insists, but I don't want to go to battle. I don't want to fight the Pain-Bringers. They don't have songs. You never know one is behind you until you hear a twig snap. Then it's too late. Pain shoots into your eyes, a place you never feel.
..........................
Beda thread her way through the wood, here ears attentive and alert. Lady buzzed past her right ear and led the way, flitting back and forth between the trees.
Lady, wait! Beda's bare foot caught on something sharp, and she fell to the ground. Twigs crunched under her weight. Beda cradled her aching wound.
Bzz-bzzzz! Lady landed on the girl's nose.
Beda swatted the beetle away. "Patience, girl!" she growled through clenched teeth.
Bzz-bzzz! We haven't got much time.
"I know, but I can't very well walk on a hurting foot." Beda's fingers slid across her foot, feeling for abrasions in the skin.
You will have to learn to fight with much more than a hurt foot in the war.
"I know, I don't want to think about it."
You will have to soon enough.
Beda sighed and pushed herself off the ground. She grimaced as pain shot up leg.
Lady tickled here cheek. There you go. Hurry now. The Uncles and Aunts won't wait for you!
Right. Beda took a deep breath. "Lead on."
Lady buzzed on ahead of her, humming an all too familiar tune. The war will come, O children rise. Defend the Father's holy land. Let our notes reach high and true, perfect songs to break all doom.
Beda ignored the notes of the song and focused on the buzzing of Lady's wings.
"Beda." The girl felt an hand on her arm and squealed.
"Peace, Beda," the voice spoke again. "It's just me. Didn't you hear my song?"
"Crescendo." Beda exhaled. "I'm sorry, I was focused on Lady."
"You need to be more aware of your surroundings."
"I know, I was just in a hurry. Have the sessions started?"
"Yes, but your name has not been called yet. Come, let's go." Crescendo grabbed here arm, his beetle now leading the way. Beda leaned close to him, trying to calm her thudding heart. She felt the trees fade away and open air rushed her face. In the distance, she could hear a thousand songs intermingled in the town square.
"Something is wrong." Beda shivered as she interpreted the frantic notes of the music.
Her friend spoke in a hushed voice. "I think now they have called your name."
Lady zipped angrily around Beda's face. "I'm going, I'm going!" Beda sprinted for the square, grimacing again as pain shot up her foot.
------------------------
Well, this is a very rough draft of the beginning of a story I've been tossing around in my head for about a year now. What I want to do with this story is just a bit difficult. If you don't mind, I'd like a little feedback so I know whether I got a few things across clearly or not.
First, did you understand that these characters cannot see, but rather they rely on their beetles to tell them where to go?
Also, is it clear that each person has a unique song by which they communicate feelings and personality?
Do you want to read more?
Oh and my title has nothing to do with the old music group...I just haven't come up with a better title yet :)
Riddle
Sorry to any of you who have already read this post on my personal blog.
I have decided that the absolute best place to find inspiration is in a math book....staring at long lines of numbers, letters, and symbols never fails to make my mind wonder to other, more interesting, places.
This is a riddle I wrote a few days ago during, yes, a time when I should have been applying myself to M.A.T.H. (Mental Abuse To Humans). It doesn't rhyme and it's rather long but when I read it to my sister she really liked it so I decided to go ahead and share it with y'all.
What is always being made, is never changed, can be mended but not undone?
What speaks a warning that is frequently unheaded,
When it tells about something that should not be repeated?
What continues forever, but is stuck in time?
Can anyone tell me the answer?
A Short Story
I've debated with myself for quite a while on whether or not to post this story.  I have been working hard recently on writing short stories. Truly, short stories. This was one of them, so for that reason I wanted to post it. But for the simple fact that it deals with a highly controversial issue, I didn't want to post it and risk finding myself in a heated debate. At last I have decided to go ahead. After all, I don't really draw any conclusions, I leave that up to the reader. So please if you don't agree with my point, or even if you do, keep in mind this blog is for writing, not debating. I would appreciate help with my story but I'm not looking to begin a dispute.
Dolice swung a leg out the door of his silver Toyota pickup, his right hand still groping around in the back of the cab. His ring finger grazed a piece of cold metal and his large hand quickly closed over it. He lifted the pistol into his lap and checked the chamber. Good, it was full. He didn't have much more time.
Both feet touched the ground as he sprang lightly out into the alley.  This was a typical little access, full of pot holes, crumpled garbage cans and shattered glass. Glancing over his shoulder, Dolice moved away leaving his door wide open. He'd want it that way for a quick escape.
His hands shook as he strode up the rusted fire escape stairs two or three steps at a time. It wasn't that he wanted to do this. He simply had no choice, there could be no surviving witnesses.  He gripped the gun more tightly, there was no time for even a sip to steady himself.
A dented metal door hesitantly lumbered open when he kicked it, letting barely enough light in to penetrate the cave-like darkness. Inside there were three forms, bound and gagged. He could barely make them out.
The clerk, the old man who had been in the alley the day it all happened, and the pawn shop owner. It wouldn't do to try holding them hostage. No, especially not here where he could be surrounded in minutes.
He raised the gun and lined up his sights on the first bundle. he could see the young man's terrified eyes above the gagged mouth. Somehow though, he was so tied he didn't really seem human. Dolice relaxed a little, this would be easier than he had thought. He pulled the trigger. One.
He shifted a little and pointed the short barrel and the next lump of rope. Two. And then again. There, that was three. Turning he fled from the smoke filled room. That part was done and over. Now to move on to the next piece of business. He clattered down the stairs.
                                                         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dr.Kordakov opened the door of his black sports car and swung a leg out. The crisp morning wind picked up stray pieces of his greying hair  and tossed them back and forth. His brown eyes glanced at the sign above his clinic.

"Headiesville Family Planning Services" On the door he could barely make out the paper he knew said, "We offer abortions." and another small white sticker on the one window which announced that he had a legal business permit.

He ducked back in his car and snatched his spotless lab coat. Just another day of work.

Alright, if you don't mind me asking, what was your conclusion?
Did you see any connection between the two stories or were they totally unrelated scribbles I glued together?
Do you have any ideas for a title?

Honestly I am not sure what to think of this story myself. It simply popped into my head one day while I was studying and I couldn't get it out. So I set aside my books, which I was not enjoying anyway, and wrote it down.

Recent Writings

Do you want to know what I have been writing recently? Business letters! Terrific...thankfully they are only for school and don't have to be mailed!

Some of them have actually been a little bit fun to write so I thought I might share a snippet or two.

My simple business letter was a serious one, written to the National Gardening Society. Nothing much interesting for you all so I won't share it.

The letter of complaint however I thought some readers might enjoy.

Dear Sir or Madam:

I purchased the book, It’s a Joke at The Laughable Book Store here in Sumtoun on January the 3rd of this year.  I paid $12.00 for this hardback and expected to be able read the contents immediately.

However, when I had read the first chapter of the book, I discovered that the next page started chapter three. The second chapter was missing. After examining the book more closely I found that every other chapter is not in the book. The book is incomplete because it contains only the odd numbered chapters.

I am confident that you will honor the commitment to quality you state on your website and will either return the twelve dollars or send me a correct and complete copy. I have included the defective book and am requesting a refund for its shipping.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Wouldn't you want your money back?

Then there is my (fake) request for employment. It's not particularly humorous but I would appreciate some feed back on it. Someday I may have to write a genuine request.

Dear Persun Iwunt,

I am a regular visitor to both the Faktoun Library and the Sumtoun Branch.  I enjoy not only your collection of books but also the assortment of movies, audio books, and CD’s. My nephews love story hour and my father has found the genealogical section to be very useful.

I myself am an avid reader and have, for many years, been loaning out (and tracking down) my own small collection of books. I am organized, prompt, a willing learner and a steady worker.

I would like to work at your library, part-time doing anything to help. I can re-shelf books, help file papers, work in the book store or help patrons locate books. I believe that I could ease the work load of the Pope County Library Staff as well as help users to discover a love for books.

I plan to call your office on Monday the 15th to request and interview. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Want to hire me? I could be a big help...as well as drain on your pocket book!

Surprisingly these are not the only things I have been writing. I did start (and complete!) a short story last week that I hope to post soon but I am building suspense first. :) (The truth is that I wrote the story out by hand and haven't had the time to type it into the computer yet!) Also I hope to write a book review in the near future. Maybe this blog will look a little more lively again? No promises though.

Just for fun...

I don't think any of us have time to do a serious post on here right now but this afternoon I managed to grab a few moments to share something humorous with you. I found it several days ago on Pintrest and it made me chuckle. I hope you can get a small smile from it as well!

Tip Tuesday/Word Wednesday

I was originally going to do this as a Word Wednesday but then I decided it was rather fitting for a Tip Tuesday. So, here's the result--a hybrid.

Are you ever sick of saying, "Jimmy was wearing a red shirt." and wish you could say something more interesting like "Jimmy was wearing a crimson shirt." but "crimson" just sounds too stiff? Here is something that might help you! (to be honest, some of these I have never heard of!)

Devotion--35 Reason Not to Sin

Years ago my family went and visited my brother, who was, at that time, in another state. While there we went to his church and this was shared. I found it pretty powerful. It's a good set of reminders to read every morning!

  1. Because a little sin leads to more sin
  2. Because my sin invites the discipline of God.
  3. Because the time spent in sin is forever wasted.
  4. Because my sin never pleases but always grieves God who loves me.
  5. Because my sin places a greater burden on my spiritual leaders.
  6. Because in time my sin always brings heaviness to my heart.
  7. Because I am doing what I do not have to do.
  8. Because my sin always makes me less than what I could be.
  9. Because others, including my family, suffer consequences due to my sin.
  10. Because my sin saddens the godly.
  11. Because my sin makes the enemies of God rejoice.
  12. Because sin deceives me into believing I have gained when in reality I have lost.
  13. Because sin may keep me from qualifying for spiritual leadership.
  14. Because the supposed benefits of my sin will never outweigh the consequences of disobedience.
  15. Because repenting of my sin is such a painful process, yet I must repent.
  16. Because sin is a very brief pleasure for an eternal loss.
  17. Because my sin may influence others to sin.
  18. Because my sin may keep others from knowing Christ.
  19. Because sin makes light of the cross, upon which Christ died for the very purpose of taking away my sin.
  20. Because it is impossible to sin and follow the Spirit at the same time.
  21. Because God chooses not to respect the prayers of those who cherish their sin.
  22. Because sin steals my reputation and robs me of my testimony.
  23. Because others once more earnest than I have been destroyed by just such sins.
  24. Because the inhabitants of heaven and hell would all testify to the foolishness of this sin.
  25. Because sin and guilt may harm both mind and body.
  26. Because sins mixed with service make the things of God tasteless.
  27. Because suffering for sin has no joy or reward, though suffering for righteousness has both.
  28. Because my sin is adultery with the world.
  29. Because I will review this very sin at the Judgment Seat where loss and gain of eternal rewards are applied.
  30. Because I can never really know ahead of time just how severe the discipline for my sin might be.
  31. Because my sin may be an indication of a lost condition.
  32. Because to sin is not to love Christ.
  33. Because my unwillingness to reject this sin now grants it an authority over me greater than I wish to believe.
  34. Because sin glorifies God only in His judgment of it, never because it is worth anything on its own.
  35. Because I promised God He would be Lord of my life.

    Weekly Newsletter

    Well, I about forgot about this... Just a warning, I might not get much posted this week because of VBS, and the week after I'm leaving for college. I'm going to see what I can do to finish up the What If... I've been sick this weekend so that's partly why I didn't get it done Friday.

    - Story (Volunteer Needed)

    - Tip Tuesday or Word Wednesday (Volunteer Needed)

    - Devotion (Volunteer Needed)

    - What If... (Grace, maybe)

    Enjoy your last bit of summer!

    Something Random - Character Creating Idea

    Before I tell you my idea, I've got to tell you a little story. My youngest sister is part African American, and loves Disney princesses. Sadly, she observed that not many of them have dark skin or curly brown hair. The other day, out of curiosity, I decided to Google "Disney princess maker," and what did I find? Exactly that! A website that allows you not only to choose skin color and hair type, but also design unique outfits. Oh, and you can even make a prince :)

    The only reason I'm sharing this is because I've discovered it can be useful in designing story characters. (That is, if you can get past that silly feeling of being on a girly princess website and dressing up "dolls" in their underwear). There are so many options and all of it is free. When you are finished, you can download the picture to your computer and save in your book/story portfolio. That way, you remember what you decided your characters were going to look like. As I said before, you just have to get past that silly feeling.

    Anyway, here's a couple I did.

    No, they are not wizards, lol. This is Casper and Kalina, my Felvy twins.
    (Their race has a sort of electrical charge that flows through their blood,
    which they can choose to release as an electrical shock. Weird, but one of my fantasy
    creations.)

    I'm sure there are other game websites that offer similar activities, but this is just one I found.

    Devotion - "Your prayers must be really powerful."

    Last night, as I was reading a book called The Invitation by Rhonda Calhoun, a couple particular lines struck me. Rebekah and Hadassah, two sisters, are in the midst of a spiritual battle. The elder sister, Rebekah, begins to pray, and the spiritual atmosphere changes. Observing the change, Hadassah speaks up. "Your prayers must be really powerful."

    "On the contrary," her sister replies. "The Life-Giver must be really powerful."

    This struck me because I often like to think that my prayers are doing something. I like to feel as if I've completed some wonderful, spiritual task, and as a result of my prayers, someone is saved or blessed. However, that is such a wrong attitude! If anything becomes of my prayers, if anyone is blessed, it is because God chose to do so. It is His power, not mine at work. To Him belongs all glory and praise for ever and ever, amen.

    Of course, I'm not saying our prayers aren't any good. The Bible does tell us that the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective (See James 5:16). But we must remember this is only because our Powerful God hears them and acts on our behalf.

    What If... Next Part

    “Look,” a white puff of breath shoots from Matt's mouth and evaporates inches from your face. “I've seen this house sit here empty for too long. Year after year I've seen people buy her and then pack up and leave a week later. They spread stories of it being haunted, but I know that's not true. Tell me, what exactly is going on?”

    You jerk your arm away, your heart pounding, but instead of sliding into your car, you allow the door to swing shut. “I'm sorry,” you begin. “It's just that …”

    “That what?” He urges you on.

    “It's this.” You fish the note out of your purse.

    As Matt unfolds the yellowed note, a light of recognition twinkles in his eyes. The wrinkles of frustration smooth on his forehead and a chuckle escapes his lips.

    “What? What is it?” You grasp his arm.

    “I can't believe she did this.” Matt chuckles again.

    “Who? What are you laughing about?” You stomp your heel on the shoveled drive. “You know Nadine?”

    “No.” Matt shakes his head. “But I know who wrote this note.”

    “Tell me!”

    “My grandma.”

    “What?”

    “My grandma.”

    “You're kidding.”

    “Nope.”

    “Your grandma must be cruel.”

    “Not really. Just a bit ornery, and maybe a little overprotective.” He laughs again, shaking his head. “I still can't believe she did this.”

    “Your Grandma owned this house?”

    Matt nods his head. “And she grew up here. As did my mother.”

    “Wow, that's why you care so much about this house.”

    “Yep.”

    “Then why don't you just buy it?” You plant your hands on your hips.

    “Well, I'm currently finishing up my doctorates degree. It doesn't exactly allow the time or money to fix up a place like this.”

    “Oh,” you say, knowing exactly what he means. You let your hands fall to your side. “So... why does your Grandma want to scare everyone away from this place?”

    “She doesn't, exactly. At least, I don't think so. I think it would be best if you just played along. Then you might figure out what this is all about..”

    “You mean, find Nadine?” For some reason excitement races up your spine.

    “Yes.”

    “Will you help me?” The words slip out of your mouth before you've had time to think them through.

    “I'd love to, but I think this will require a little more knowledge than what I can offer.”

    “What do you mean?” You take the note from his hand.

    “I'd like you to show the note to my mom.”

    “Your mom?”

    “Yeah, come on.” Matt starts his way down the drive way, swinging the snow shovel at his side.

    You glance back at your car, then at the note, and back at Matt, then follow.

    To be continued....

    Sorry, I'm trying to end the story and need to get you a bit closer to something else in the story before I let you make anymore choices about where the story goes :) It doesn't sound fair, but I was beginning to feel like the story wasn't going much of anywhere.

    A Joyful Devotion

    Anyone who knows me very well can tell you I am not a very joyful person. Personality wise I am mostly mellow with very rare and subtle swings.

    However, my oldest brother pointed out a while back that the Bible actually commands joy.

    Philippians 4:4  "Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!"

    Psalm 32:11 "Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, you righteous; sing, all you who are upright in heart!"

    And we are reminded:

    Nehemiah 8:10 "...the joy of the Lord is your strength."

    Now before I go further, let me point out something. Joy and happiness are not the same thing. The word happiness comes from happenstance. In other words, your circumstances. Joy, on the other hand, as we can see in the above verses, comes from God.

    After the talk that my brother gave I began to study joy a bit more than I ever had. I found that  it was closely tied to gratitude. Have you ever noticed it's hard to be thankful for something and grumpy at the same time? And guess what? There is always something to be thankful for!

    I really had this last sentence hammered into my brain when one morning while reading verses for a Bible study Grace and I do together I came across this:

    Matthew 5:11-12

    11 “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

    Okay, totally a slap in the face for next time I am grumpy because I spilled the chicken spaghetti I was making for super all over the kitchen floor.

    If I am told to rejoice under insult and persecution (note: "because of me") when do I not have to rejoice?

    I believe that if happiness if based on our circumstance, joy is based on our attitude. We can be joyful without being happy. It is quite possible to say, " I really did not want hot noodles and creamy sauce all over my feet right now but hey, maybe this means we'll get to go out to eat!"

    I am going to leave you with a verse I reviewed on Scripture Typer this morning~

    Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.  Romans 15:13

    Joyfully,
    Kelpie

    A Few of My Book Characters!

    Meet the Whitman Family...

    The fun-loving father and minister at the local Church
    The gentle, yet firm stay-at-home Mother. Very set in her ways.
    Eldest and only daughter in the family. Spunky, imaginative,
    but fearful of any new situations.
    Jessica's (older) twin brother. A determined leader
    The bookworm of the family. Quiet and thoughtful.
    The youngest and orneriest of the Whitman family. Makes
    up for every bit of quietness of his older siblings.

    Meet Rachel Colley...

    Jessica's dramatic but sweet BFF who moves
    away to California

    Meet Bear Huttner...

    The dirty, stinky, and ever-helpful neighbor boy
    who has a crush on Jessica

    Meet Owen Howard and his friends...

    Perhaps the most popular and unpopular kid in
    Aspen...
    The "new boy" in town who quickly joins
    Owen's group of friends
    Another one of Owen's annoying tag-alongs

     Which ones are your favorite? I think I like Jessica  and Owen the best. Joey didn't turn out quite like I wanted him too :(
