Recent Writings

Do you want to know what I have been writing recently? Business letters! Terrific...thankfully they are only for school and don't have to be mailed!

Some of them have actually been a little bit fun to write so I thought I might share a snippet or two.

My simple business letter was a serious one, written to the National Gardening Society. Nothing much interesting for you all so I won't share it.

The letter of complaint however I thought some readers might enjoy.

Dear Sir or Madam:

I purchased the book, It’s a Joke at The Laughable Book Store here in Sumtoun on January the 3rd of this year.  I paid $12.00 for this hardback and expected to be able read the contents immediately.

However, when I had read the first chapter of the book, I discovered that the next page started chapter three. The second chapter was missing. After examining the book more closely I found that every other chapter is not in the book. The book is incomplete because it contains only the odd numbered chapters.

I am confident that you will honor the commitment to quality you state on your website and will either return the twelve dollars or send me a correct and complete copy. I have included the defective book and am requesting a refund for its shipping.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Kelpie Fly

Wouldn't you want your money back?

Then there is my (fake) request for employment. It's not particularly humorous but I would appreciate some feed back on it. Someday I may have to write a genuine request.

Dear Persun Iwunt,

I am a regular visitor to both the Faktoun Library and the Sumtoun Branch.  I enjoy not only your collection of books but also the assortment of movies, audio books, and CD’s. My nephews love story hour and my father has found the genealogical section to be very useful.

I myself am an avid reader and have, for many years, been loaning out (and tracking down) my own small collection of books. I am organized, prompt, a willing learner and a steady worker.

I would like to work at your library, part-time doing anything to help. I can re-shelf books, help file papers, work in the book store or help patrons locate books. I believe that I could ease the work load of the Pope County Library Staff as well as help users to discover a love for books.

I plan to call your office on Monday the 15th to request and interview. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Kelpie Fly

Want to hire me? I could be a big help...as well as drain on your pocket book!

Surprisingly these are not the only things I have been writing. I did start (and complete!) a short story last week that I hope to post soon but I am building suspense first. :) (The truth is that I wrote the story out by hand and haven't had the time to type it into the computer yet!) Also I hope to write a book review in the near future. Maybe this blog will look a little more lively again? No promises though.

  1. Well, I wish I had some good feedback to give, but I don't. I'm not exactly an expert in the employment letter area... Thanks for posting. I sure haven't had time.

    1. Really Josie? In high school? What program did you use?

    2. Yep; in high school! We used BJU for English. Is that what you use?

    3. No, I use Wordsmith. It would have been humorous if we had used the same program! :) And not too unprobable either. Wordsmith is well liked even if it is a bit old.
