I was rather at a loss what to post today, and then I came across this. I really appreciated it, I hope y'all do too.
1. Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.
2. Never use a long word where a short one will do.
3. If is is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.
4. Never use the passive where you can use the active.
5. Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent. (I'm not sure I completely agree with this one.)
6. Break any of these rule rather than say anything outright barbarous.
---George Orwell----
You might wish to check out the article I found this in. It has a lot more tips from authors but please know that I don't exactly indorse the first Mark Twain quote;it makes a good point but I wish he wouldn't have used that word.
